The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked both optimism for the future and concerns about its potential pitfalls. Among these, bias has become a pressing social issue, with discriminatory algorithms perpetuating inequalities based on race, gender, and age, and fueling social conflict.
Moreover, AI's addictive potential is a growing concern, impacting both users and developers to worrying degrees. These concerns highlight the urgent need for a fresh ethical framework, and this is where neuroscience enters the picture. This article proposes that understanding the biological underpinnings of addiction through neuroscience can provide a critical foundation for establishing ethical guidelines in AI development. By shedding light on how AI systems can exploit similar reward pathways in the brain as addictive substances, neuroscience can inform the development of safeguards to prevent AI from exacerbating existing addictions or creating new ones.
